Update: Ben Moore's Goal Is Five Steps by New Year's
Three weeks after he was struck on westbound I-24 in Chattanooga, Ben Moore of Doug Yates Towing and Recovery is working hard on his recovery.
In an Oct. 15 post, his employer said Moore's right leg below the knee was shattered and his left leg, left foot and a hand were broken. He has more surgery ahead in the coming weeks. For now, he spends three to four hours a day in physical and occupational therapy, relearning how to stand and walk. His immediate goal is to take five steps on his own by Dec. 31. He expects it will be at least 12 months before he's back behind the wheel of a heavy-duty wrecker.
Doug Yates Towing says Moore did everything right that night: amber lights on, reflective triangles out, and high-visibility gear on. The driver who hit him on Oct. 1 was cited under Tennessee's Move Over Law and for failing to use due care and failing to stay in their lane. No criminal charges have been reported.
His wife, Shelby, has set up a GoFundMe to help the family with day-to-day needs during his recovery. It has raised about $15,000 of its $50,000 goal: https://www.gofundme.com/f/support-ben-moores-recovery
October is National Slow Down, Move Over Month. When you see flashing lights on the shoulder, slow down and move over. The next time you do, you may be the reason another operator makes it home.
