Update: Ben Moore in Rehab as Family Starts Fundraiser

Ben Moore, the Doug Yates Towing and Recovery operator hit Oct. 1 on westbound I-24 in Chattanooga, is now in rehabilitation, according to a GoFundMe his wife, Shelby Moore, started Oct. 8. The fundraiser covers the family's day-to-day needs while he recovers. It had raised $8,145 of its $50,000 goal as of Oct. 12.

Moore is from Kalamazoo, Michigan, and has towed for about 11 years in Michigan, Iowa and Tennessee, Fox 17 West Michigan reported. "Everything in my right leg was completely shattered pretty much from the knee down," he told the station. He said he was following safety procedures when he was hit. He's calling for "harsher first offense penalties" for drivers who hit roadside workers, and for tow trucks to be allowed a blue light, which Tennessee and Michigan law don't allow now.

Moore also told NewsChannel 9 he isn't sure he'll be able to work interstate tows again.

The driver who hit him was cited for violating Tennessee's Move Over Law, failure to use due care and failure to maintain her lane. No criminal charges have been reported. Fox 17 said Chattanooga police hadn't answered its question about charges.
